Top tips for getting festival ready: The face

The great British festival season is upon us! Here at Lypsso we love a good festival, but in amongst the mud and music, skincare can understandably take a back seat.

In this article we take a look at the best festival face care tips, without having to resort to facial wipes!

Without access to water ad the lovely fluffy towels at home, festival goers opt for convenience over time and quality, with most stocking up on the dreaded facial wipes!

Facial wipes aren’t recommended, but for sensitive skin sufferers especially it isn’t a good idea due to wipes containing high levels of preservatives, alcohol and anti-bacterial agents which are prime triggers of redness and reactions.

During the festival

Stay hydrated

If you are looking to keep your complexion clear and glowing whilst also having lots of energy, the secret is to drink water. We know drinking alcohol in moderation is more or less guaranteed at any festival, but with every two alcoholic drinks, make sure that you have at least one glass of water to compensate.

Our tip:  And remember to drink at least 2 liters a day of water. And of course, eating healthy helps too!

Moisturise your skin

Don’t let your skin dry out. Always have a moisturizing product in hand.

Our tip: Opt for a facial mist/ water spray that is great for dry, flaky, easily irritated skin and can be used under and over make up as an instant ‘pick me up’.

Make sure to cleanse your skin

Remember to pack a small bottle of cleanser and some cotton wool pads so you will be able to cleanse your face and remove make up every night.

Our tip:  Find a cleanser that is for your skin type and will not irritate your skin. Gel cleansers are great for oily/combination skin, whereas foam cleansers are better for dry to sensitive skin types.

Keep your eyes fresh

Long day’s outdoors and non-stop partying can leave your eyes looking puffy and tired. Opt for an energizing roll-on that will banish those bags instantly and will cool the skin around your eyes.

Lip balm

Dehydration and heat exposure can cause irritation and dryness to your lips. Keep an intensive lip balm to hand and apply regularly.

Take care of oily skin

Choose a tea tree oil if you are not maintaining a good skin care routine (and lets be honest, how many of us have the perfect skincare routine at a festival?). So with that in mind, your skin will be more likely to break out and you are going to need a quick remedy.

Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial properties, which not only treats spots, but also can be used for insect bites and cuts.

Look after your skin in the sun

If you are fortunate enough to have sun when you are at the festival you must make sure your sun protection is working hard to offset any sun exposure to your skin.

Good sun protection comes in various shapes and sizes, from comfortable dry-touch oils to creams, milk and lotions that will hydrate the skin at the same time as protecting it. Choose a product with a high SPF (at least SPF 15 or more) and re-apply it as needed during the day on all areas of exposed skin.

Our tip:  Bring a fashionable and cool hat to shade your face and neck from the sun.

How to take care of your skin after a festival

Cleanse your skin

Once at home, use your favourite cleanser to remove make up alongside dirt and grime.

Exfoliate your skin

Not having access to showers at a festival can leave your skin clogged. Using an exfoliating scrub will allow your pores to breathe and will remove the dead skin cells that have built up during the festival.

Make sure that you are kind to your skin when using a scrub with grainy particles, as your face may be extra sensitive if it has had a weekend being exposed to the sun and late nights. Do small, circular motions, and take extra care around any blemishes to prevent further irritation.

Apply a face mask

Applying a facial mask will help to draw out impurities. Different types of facemasks serve different purposes. For a deep clean, a peel off mask is beneficial but if you have oily skin then a clay mask is advised. Alternatively, if you have dry skin, use a hydrating skin mask, which is designed to help lock in moisture. After a long weekend your skin will need rehydrating!

Moisturise your skin

To help boost your skin’s natural glow, massage the moisturiser into your skin, this will help the blood flow and will leave your face feeling and looking fresh, ready to face the world!
